AT FOUR OâCLOCK the audio-visor buzzed. Mrs. Morris flipped the tab. âHello, Helen!â she said, in welcome.
âHello, Mary. How are things in New York?â
âFine, how are things in Scranton? You look tired.â
âSo do you. The children. Underfoot,â said Helen.
Mrs. Morris sighed, âMy Mink, too. The super Invasion.â
Helen laughed. âAre your kids playing that game, too?â
âLord, yes. Tomorrow itâll be geometrical jacks and motorized hopscotch. Were we this bad when we were kids in â48?â
âWorse. Japs and Nazis. Donât know how my parents put up with me. Tomboy.â
âParents learn to shut their ears.â
A silence.
âWhatâs wrong, Mary?â asked Helen. Mrs. Morrisâ eyes were half-closed; her tongue slid slowly, thoughtfully over her lower lip. âEh,â She jerked. âOh, nothing. Just thought about that. Shutting ears and such. Never mind. Where were we?â

âMust be a new password. Mink likes him, too.â
âDidnât know it got as far as New York. Word of mouth, I imagine. Looks like a scrap drive. I talked to Josephine and she said her kidsâthatâs in Boston âare wild on this new game. Itâs sweeping the country.â

âAlmost finished,â said Mink.
âSwell,â said Mrs. Morris. âWhatâs that?â
âA yo-yo,â said Mink. âWatch.â
She flung the yo-yo down its string. Reaching the end itâ
It vanished.
âSee?â said Mink. âOpe!â Dibbling her finger she made the yo-yo reappear and zip up the string.
âDo that again,â said her mother. âCanât. Zero hourâs five oâclock! âBye.â Mink exited, zipping her yo-yo.
On the audio-visor, Helen laughed. âTim brought one of those yo-yoâs in this morning, but when I got curious he said he wouldnât show it to me, and when I tried to work it, finally, it wouldnât work.â âYouâre not impressionableâ said Mrs. Morris.
âWhat?â
âNever mind. Something I thought of. Can I help you, Helen?â
âI wanted to get that black-and-white cake recipeââ
